Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 is coming to PS5 on October 23, 2026, with PS5 Pro enhancements. There is no PS4 version. The US PlayStation listing shows the Standard Edition at $69.99 and the Vault Edition at $99.99. Both contain the base game; Vault adds premium content rather than a different version of the campaign or multiplayer.
For online multiplayer, budget for a PlayStation Plus subscription as well as the game. Digital preorders include Campaign Early Access from October 16 and DMZ Early Access from October 20, subject to regional timing and availability. Those benefits do not establish an early multiplayer launch.
Choose the correct PlayStation version
Buy the listing marked Modern Warfare 4 for PS5. The similar names used throughout Call of Duty make the platform label particularly important: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a different game, and older Modern Warfare releases do not determine this game's supported hardware.
The PlayStation store places several Call of Duty products together. A Warzone card marked PS4 and PS5 describes Warzone, not Modern Warfare 4. Likewise, a Cross-Gen label attached to Black Ops 7, Modern Warfare III, or Modern Warfare II does not mean the 2026 game includes PS4 access. Read the specific product title and its platform line before paying.
| Purchase check | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Game identity | Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 | Avoids the 2007 game and earlier reboot entries |
| Platform | PS5 | There is no PS4 edition |
| Edition | Standard or Vault | Determines premium extras, not the base platform |
| Format | Digital purchase or compatible physical copy | Physical copies have different upgrade and preorder conditions |
| Purchasing account | The PlayStation account you intend to use | Entitlements and qualifying discounts depend on that account |
PS5 Pro is supported through enhancements to the PS5 release. You do not need to interpret the Pro label as a separate game purchase. Its value is in the supported graphics features, while your screen and selected display mode still determine which presentation features you can use.
DualSense features in combat
The PS5 version supports adaptive triggers and haptic feedback through the DualSense wireless controller. Adaptive triggers vary resistance to convey weapon handling. Haptic feedback communicates impacts, movement, and explosions through the controller rather than relying only on a conventional vibration effect.
These are presentation and control features. They do not establish a damage bonus, faster weapon handling, or a competitive advantage over another platform. Choose the controller experience according to what helps you read the game and remain comfortable during a session.
For your first session, distinguish a controller feature from a problem with the game. A changing trigger feel can be part of adaptive trigger support; it is not, by itself, evidence that a weapon is malfunctioning. Similarly, haptics may respond differently to movement and explosions. Establish how those supported features feel before making broader judgments about input behavior.
The PlayStation listing also marks vibration and trigger effects as supported. It does not provide measured input-latency results or a per-weapon resistance chart, so neither should be assumed from the feature labels.
Display features on PS5 and PS5 Pro
The PS5 feature set includes 4K visuals, 120Hz High Frame Rate support, and Variable Refresh Rate. These are supported capabilities rather than a promise that every scene runs at a locked 120 frames per second in native 4K. Resolution, refresh rate, and visual quality are separate aspects of the presentation.

On PS5 Pro, enhanced PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution support and increased graphics quality are advertised for 120Hz and 60Hz modes. An unlocked frame rate is also described when VRR and 120Hz are enabled. The practical decision is therefore between the modes your display can actually use, rather than assuming that the highest number on a feature list applies simultaneously to every setting.
| Feature | Standard PS5 | PS5 Pro detail |
|---|---|---|
| 4K presentation | Advertised | Enhanced presentation features are supported |
| 120Hz HFR | Supported | Increased graphics quality in the 120Hz mode is advertised |
| VRR | Supported | Unlocked frame rate is described with VRR and 120Hz enabled |
| PSSR | No specific claim here | Enhanced PSSR support is advertised |
| 60Hz presentation | Available within the described mode options | Increased graphics quality in the 60Hz mode is advertised |
Do not treat a supported display feature as an independently measured performance result. If your priority is responsiveness, examine the HFR option with a compatible screen. If your priority is image presentation, compare the available visual modes on your own display. There is no verified universal setting combination that is best for every PS5 owner.
Remote Play and Low Energy Mode are also listed among the PlayStation features. Remote Play provides another way to continue on a compatible device, while Low Energy Mode is intended to reduce overall power consumption. Neither changes the game's supported console generation.
Audio and online requirements
PS5 supports 3D audio through built-in TV speakers or analogue and USB stereo headphones. The feature is intended to help present the surrounding conflict, including gunfire and explosions. Your chosen output device matters, so assess the audio through the equipment you actually use rather than assuming that a television and a headset provide an identical experience.
The PlayStation product page requires PS Plus for online play and lists support for up to 60 online players. That is an overall product capability, not the size of every playlist or a promise that every mode uses the same player count. The listing also identifies a single-player experience and optional in-game purchases.
Two-player split-screen multiplayer is confirmed for PS5. This does not establish split-screen support for every mode, campaign co-op, or an unlimited number of local players. Keep the distinction between the supported multiplayer feature and modes whose local-play behavior has not been specified.
An Activision account is required, and a linked mobile phone number may also be required. Multiplayer and DMZ need a continuous internet connection, including private multiplayer matches. An installed copy and an active PS Plus subscription serve different purposes: the first supplies the game license, while the subscription enables applicable console online services.
Standard and Vault Edition choices
Standard is sufficient if your goal is to own the base PS5 game. Vault includes Standard plus the Hostile Alliance Operator Pack, Special Forces Operator Pack, Signature Weapon Collection, one season of BlackCell, and the DMZ Deployment Bonus. The premium extras should be weighed according to whether you want those specific items.
BlackCell content has its own availability conditions. For a preorder, the included season becomes accessible when the Season 1 Battle Pass is available in the game. Buying Vault does not mean that every listed season item can be used during Campaign Early Access.
Digital Standard owners can buy a Vault upgrade, with a suggested US retail price of $30 or the regional equivalent. Physical editions cannot be upgraded to Vault under the stated edition terms. If upgrading later is an important part of your purchasing plan, that difference should be settled before choosing a disc copy.
A 10% Vault loyalty discount is offered to eligible players before launch. Eligibility requires ownership and play of a qualifying Call of Duty title on the same platform account; the discount is applied before checkout. It does not apply to the Vault upgrade. Check the actual checkout amount instead of assuming every PlayStation account receives the offer.
The physical-versus-digital decision also affects preparation. A digital purchase can be located directly in Your Collection under its owning account, while a physical installation begins with the disc. Neither format makes required updates disappear. If you expect to start with a preorder benefit, confirm the benefit in the actual offer before relying on possession of a boxed copy or a retailer's general release listing. The base game, early-access timing, and premium upgrade eligibility are three different purchase conditions, even when the store presents them together.
Identify the PlayStation preorder blueprint
The digital preorder offer includes the Inner Circuit M4 Weapon Blueprint for use in Modern Warfare 4 at launch. On PS5 it uses the mil-spec visual treatment, while the translucent green Xbox Anniversary treatment is reserved for the described Xbox Series X|S presentation. The two versions have identical builds, attachments, and gameplay characteristics.

Use the appearance to identify the correct platform treatment, rather than interpreting the absence of green coloring on PS5 as a missing reward. The blueprint requires Modern Warfare 4 on the preorder platform and must be redeemed by October 23, 2027. This item-specific redemption condition is separate from the game license and the early-access dates.
Download and install the PS5 game
For a digital purchase made through the console store, follow the download prompt after buying. If you preordered or bought through an in-game store, use the library route:
- Open Game Library from the Games area on the PS5 home screen.
- Open Your Collection.
- Find and select Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
- Select Download and allow the installation to finish.
- Launch the game and complete any required updates before attempting the available mode.
For a physical purchase, insert the game disc into a compatible console's disc drive and follow the installation prompt. After installation, launch the game and allow required updates to install. A physical copy is not a substitute for checking the early-access eligibility attached to a digital preorder offer.
Before installing, check the console software. Open Settings, then System, then System Software, and choose System Software Update and Settings. If an update is available, select Update System Software and let it complete. The same menu can enable automatic downloading and installation of system updates.
Check access problems in a useful order
If a mode remains locked, first establish which access window applies. Campaign starts early for qualifying digital preorders on October 16, DMZ on October 20, and the complete launch is October 23. Campaign access alone does not prove that multiplayer should already be open.
Next, confirm that the current PlayStation account owns the correct PS5 edition. Check the purchase record and library entry before buying another copy. Then inspect download and update progress; a product shown in the library can still have installation work remaining.
If the game opens but online play does not, check the relevant subscription and account requirements separately from ownership. If only a premium item is missing, examine its redemption conditions and intended availability date instead of treating that as a missing base-game license. Finally, use the countdown and service messages for your own storefront region: the early-access terms allow timezone differences, outages, and changes to platform availability.
