The Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 DMZ release date is October 23, 2026, with DMZ Early Access beginning October 20 for qualifying digital preorders. Both Digital Standard and Vault are included in the stated digital preorder offer. Vault's extra deployment supplies are a separate premium benefit, not a requirement to enter DMZ.
October 20 is the scheduled early-access date, but no precise universal unlock hour is established here. Outages, timezone differences, and platform availability can affect actual entry. Use the message shown for your own purchasing account and region before assuming that a locked mode means the launch has changed.
Two dates for two access groups
DMZ belongs to the Modern Warfare 4 base game. The difference between October 20 and October 23 is who can enter during the early window, rather than whether the mode is an unrelated standalone product.
| Date | Access stage | Purchase condition |
|---|---|---|
| October 16 | Campaign Early Access | Qualifying digital preorder; this date does not open DMZ |
| October 20 | DMZ Early Access | Qualifying digital preorder or prepurchase |
| October 23 | Full Modern Warfare 4 launch | Ownership of the base game on a supported platform |
The edition terms describe DMZ access beginning Tuesday, October 20, with Pacific Time context, but do not provide a precise clock hour here. Do not borrow an earlier beta time or a launch countdown from another platform to manufacture an exact DMZ schedule.
The October 16 Campaign window is separate. Being able to play the story does not establish that DMZ should already be open on that earlier date. Similarly, October 20 DMZ access does not create a separately confirmed early Multiplayer release.
Editions that qualify for early entry
The offer applies to qualifying digital editions, including Digital Standard and the digital Vault Edition. If your only purchasing objective is the named DMZ early-access window, Vault is not required solely for that purpose.
Check the full product description on the purchasing platform. An upgrade without an eligible base game is not a complete license, and a physical reservation should not automatically be assumed to include every digital benefit. The platform account used to buy or redeem the game is the first place to verify the entitlement.
Modern Warfare 4 launches on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. PC routes include Steam, Battle.net, and Xbox on PC. There is no PS4 or Xbox One release. An older Modern Warfare or Warzone installation on those consoles cannot supply a version that is not offered for the hardware.
Xbox Play Anywhere applies to the qualifying Xbox purchase route, giving access on Xbox console and Xbox on PC. It should not be extended to a Steam or Battle.net license. Choose the ownership route that matches the device you intend to use for your first deployment.
What opens during DMZ Early Access
The digital edition terms describe access to all of DMZ, rather than a short named demo. The mode is an extraction experience set in Hajin, where you enter alone or with a squad, pursue objectives, collect gear and resources, and decide when to leave.

Successful extraction carries recovered items into future deployments. Failing to extract can cost the equipment and resources brought into or found during the run. That persistent risk is central to the mode, and it is separate from the store entitlement that determines whether you can enter it.
Hajin includes varied operational areas, such as the Fallout reactor, Prison complex, Hajin City, and Military Base. Their appearance in the mode description is useful orientation; it does not establish a complete route, a safe loot circuit, or exact coordinates for the opening session.
This page focuses on access and preparation. Detailed mission solutions, loot locations, and extraction tactics depend on the specific objective and should not be guessed from a launch announcement.
Prepare for the first deployment
DMZ offers Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, Side Ops, high-value targets, and open exploration. Choose an initial objective deliberately rather than treating every opportunity on the map as something that must be completed in the same run.
The mode combines hostile forces with rival Operators. You can fight, avoid, negotiate, or disengage depending on the situation. Its Bounty system raises notoriety when pursuing rival Operators, adding another risk to aggressive player hunting. The launch description does not establish a universal safest route or guarantee that another squad will cooperate.
Before entering, identify what you want to recover or accomplish and what would make you attempt an extraction. That is practical preparation for the described risk structure, not a claim that one objective or loadout is mandatory for all new players.
The named activities also differ in scope. Story Missions advance narrative tasks, while Dynamic Operations are multi-step activities and Side Ops provide additional opportunities. Read the chosen objective in the game rather than assuming that all three use the same completion conditions.
The Forward Operating Base and persistent gear
The Forward Operating Base is the hub used before and after extraction operations. It includes a 3D Printer crafting station, a Stash, weapon purchasing, a firing range, bounty boards, and upgrade systems that unlock through progression.

Use the hub to distinguish stored inventory from the equipment assigned to an active deployment. The mode's persistent inventory means that preparation has consequences beyond a single match. A full walkthrough of crafting or storage rules requires the relevant in-game details; the existence of the hub alone does not establish specific recipes or safe storage limits.
The Active Duty menu supports a roster of Operators with persistent backpacks, loadouts, and progression. Trait Points earned through missions can be invested across three Trait Trees. These support different areas such as combat, infiltration, looting, recovery, and resource gathering.
The early-access date does not itself specify a universal optimal Trait allocation or promise a particular progression speed. Begin by understanding the displayed choices and their effects before spending resources on the assumption that a build from another Call of Duty mode transfers unchanged.
Vault's deployment extras are separate
Vault includes one extra Active Duty slot plus a Deployment Kit. The kit contains two Weapon Insurance Contracts, two Operator Rescue Beacons, two Fulton Drop Markers, two Medium Backpacks, and two 2-Plate Carriers.
Those are the listed premium contents, not conditions for Standard owners to enter DMZ. They also do not establish unlimited replacement supplies or immunity from losing equipment. If a premium item is missing, check that item's availability and the owned edition instead of assuming the entire mode is inaccessible.
The Vault bundle also includes operator packs, weapon blueprints, and one season of BlackCell. BlackCell has a season-specific availability condition. Its absence before the applicable Battle Pass appears is a different issue from a missing DMZ early-access entitlement.
Install the game on the purchasing platform
For PS5, open Game Library, choose Your Collection, select Modern Warfare 4, and download. For Xbox Series X|S, open My games & apps, See all, Full library, then All owned games, and use Install all on Modern Warfare 4.
For Battle.net, select the game through All Games and install. For Steam, use the Call of Duty entry in Library. For Xbox on PC, use My Library in the Xbox app, select Modern Warfare 4, and install. Clear the Installed filter under Play state if the app is hiding the uninstalled purchase.
Finish available system-software updates on the console before installation and complete required game updates afterward. A preload is preparation, not an earlier entitlement. PC preloading began October 15 at 9 AM PT, but that does not move DMZ access ahead of its stated October 20 window.
PC hardware and security prerequisites still apply during early access. TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are mandatory, and the launch storage requirement is an SSD with 115 GB available. Additional updates may require more space. A different storefront purchase does not bypass those prerequisites.
Account, internet, and subscription checks
An Activision account is required, and a linked mobile phone number may be required. DMZ needs a continuous internet connection. Console online modes also need the applicable platform subscription, such as PlayStation Plus on PS5 or the required Xbox online service on Xbox consoles.
These checks serve different purposes. Game ownership supplies the license; preorder eligibility supplies early timing; a platform subscription supplies applicable online-service access; and a working internet connection allows the online mode to operate. Resolving one does not prove all the others are satisfied.
Game Pass does not include Modern Warfare 4 at launch. Inclusion is planned for Holiday 2027, so an active subscription alone is not an October 20 or October 23 game license. Xbox cloud play also requires ownership alongside the eligible subscription described by the storefront.
Troubleshoot a locked DMZ entry
- Verify that the game is the 2026 Modern Warfare 4 rather than an older DMZ or Modern Warfare release.
- Confirm the purchasing account owns a qualifying digital edition if entering before October 23.
- Compare the date and mode with the storefront's own regional access message.
- Complete the required installation and updates.
- Check the Activision account and applicable console online subscription.
- On PC, resolve hardware or security errors before changing unrelated game settings.
- Check current service messages if ownership and prerequisites are correct but entry still fails.
Record the exact displayed error if the issue persists. A missing license, unfinished download, security error, and temporary service outage call for different remedies. Identifying that state avoids unnecessary repurchases and keeps the early-access date separate from the operational problem preventing a first deployment.
