Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 early access has two separate start dates: Campaign begins October 16, 2026, and DMZ begins October 20, 2026, for qualifying digital preorders. Both Digital Standard and Vault qualify under the stated offer. No separate Multiplayer early-access date has been established; the full game launches October 23.
As of October 20, Campaign Early Access has begun and DMZ has reached its scheduled start date. Actual availability can vary with timezone differences, outages, and platform timing. A calendar date alone is not confirmation that every storefront worldwide has unlocked a mode at the same moment.
Identify the access window you want
Early access is attached to a named mode and an eligible purchase. It is not a general entitlement to every part of the game before release. Start by identifying which mode you are attempting to enter, then compare its date with your purchase conditions.
| Access window | Stated start | Purchase condition | What the date does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Campaign Early Access | October 16 | Qualifying digital preorder or prepurchase | An early Multiplayer launch |
| DMZ Early Access | October 20 | Qualifying digital preorder or prepurchase | A universal unlock hour for all regions |
| Full game | October 23 | Base-game ownership | That every seasonal extra is already available |
The edition terms name the Campaign start as Friday, October 16, and the DMZ start as Tuesday, October 20, with Pacific Time context. They do not supply a precise clock hour here. Do not create a countdown by guessing a time or by copying a beta start hour.
Campaign and DMZ are different entitlements. A working campaign does not prove that DMZ must already be unlocked, and a DMZ stream does not prove that public Multiplayer has started. This distinction is especially useful when a storefront uses a short “early access” label without displaying the full benefit description beside it.
Digital Standard qualifies
You do not need Vault solely to obtain the two listed early-access periods. The offer applies to all qualifying digital editions, including Digital Standard. Vault adds premium content, but the Campaign and DMZ start dates are shared with Standard.
Before purchasing, check that the selected product is a complete digital edition for the intended platform. An upgrade alone is not a separate base-game license. Likewise, the existence of physical editions does not mean every disc reservation carries the digital offer.
The confirmed platforms are PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. PC storefronts include Steam, Battle.net, and Xbox on PC. There is no PS4 or Xbox One edition of the 2026 game, so purchasing or installing an older Call of Duty title on those systems cannot satisfy this early-access entitlement.
Use the same platform account that owns the digital purchase when installing and launching. If several household accounts use the device, first verify which one made the purchase. Do not buy a second edition until the ownership check establishes that a license is actually missing.
What Campaign Early Access includes
Campaign Early Access provides the full Campaign before the complete October 23 release. The campaign has sixteen missions, with young South Korean soldiers and Captain Price confronting connected fronts of the conflict. The early-access offer is not described as merely a short demo or a small selection of missions.

This page concerns eligibility and entry. Mission names, walkthrough routes, completion time, and story outcomes are separate questions; none is needed to establish whether your purchase qualifies. You can prepare the installation without reading campaign spoilers or assuming that a mission list from the 2007 game belongs to this release.
Campaign access continues through the early period until full launch. The offer does not state that completing the story is necessary to unlock DMZ or Multiplayer. Avoid treating time spent in Campaign as an access requirement for another mode unless the game explicitly presents such a requirement.
What DMZ Early Access includes
The digital preorder offer describes early access to all of DMZ from October 20. DMZ is an extraction mode built around deployments into Hajin, objectives, recovered gear, and extraction decisions. It is included with the Modern Warfare 4 base game; the early date determines when an eligible preorder can enter it.

Vault's DMZ Deployment Bonus is a different benefit. Its extra Active Duty slot and supplies should not be confused with permission to enter the mode. Digital Standard can qualify for early entry even though it does not include the Vault deployment package.
The date does not guarantee an uninterrupted first session. The offer warns about possible outages and applicable timezone differences, and platform availability or start dates can change. If the menu remains locked, check the region-specific service message before assuming that the preorder has been lost.
Preloading and installing are separate from unlocking
PC preloading began October 15 at 9 AM PT. A finished preload means the files were downloaded; it does not move Campaign, DMZ, or the full-game entitlement to an earlier date. The full PC release is described as October 23 at midnight local time, which is distinct from the early-access schedule.
The installation route depends on the platform:
| Platform route | Where to locate the game | Main installation action |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | Game Library, then Your Collection | Select Modern Warfare 4 and Download |
| Xbox Series X|S | My games & apps, See all, Full library, All owned games | Select the game and Install all |
| Battle.net | All Games | Select Modern Warfare 4 and Install |
| Steam | Library | Select the Call of Duty entry and Install |
| Xbox on PC | My Library in the Xbox app | Select Modern Warfare 4 and Install |
In the Xbox PC app, clear the Installed filter under Play state if the library is hiding owned games that have not been installed. On consoles, complete available system-software updates before beginning installation. Required game updates should also be allowed to finish before testing access.
Check ownership before troubleshooting downloads
When a mode does not open, separate the problem into ownership, installation, access timing, or online-service eligibility. Each has a different next step, and changing graphics settings or repeatedly reinstalling cannot resolve every category.
- Open the purchase record for the platform account currently signed in.
- Verify that the purchase is Modern Warfare 4, the 2026 game.
- Confirm that it is an eligible digital edition rather than an unrelated add-on or an older title.
- Locate the owned game in the appropriate library and complete its installation.
- Check whether the locked mode is Campaign, DMZ, or Multiplayer.
- Compare that mode with the applicable date and local storefront message.
- If the requirement is an online subscription or account condition, resolve that separately from the game license.
An installed shared Call of Duty entry is not, on its own, evidence that the current account owns Modern Warfare 4. Conversely, a library license is not proof that every required file and update is ready. Establish the missing state before taking a larger corrective action.
Platform and account prerequisites
An Activision account is required, and a linked mobile phone number may be required. Console social features and online modes also require the applicable platform subscription. These prerequisites remain relevant during early access; a preorder does not erase unrelated service conditions.
PC players must meet the game's compatibility and security requirements, including TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Those conditions apply across the supported PC storefronts. If the game cannot start because a security prerequisite is missing, waiting for another access date or buying through a different launcher is not a supported solution.
Multiplayer and DMZ require a continuous internet connection, including private Multiplayer matches. A temporary service interruption can therefore affect entry even when the purchase and date are correct. Check current in-game or platform service messages before treating a connection failure as a missing entitlement.
Bonuses have their own delivery dates
Preorder extras are not all delivered through the same mode or at the same time. The Hunter Killer skin and Gilded Pearl camo offer includes use in Black Ops 7 or Warzone under its stated redemption conditions, while Modern Warfare 4 availability begins at launch. Seeing one bonus in another game does not establish that every early-access component is installed.
The Inner Circuit M4 blueprint also has platform-specific visual treatment. Its Xbox Series X|S appearance differs from the mil-spec appearance on other platforms, but the versions are functionally identical. A visual difference between platforms is therefore not automatically a missing reward.
Vault's BlackCell inclusion becomes available with the relevant Battle Pass season. It is not expected to make the Season 1 system usable merely because Campaign Early Access has begun. Check the named reward and its availability condition before reporting the whole edition as incomplete.
Avoid beta and subscription confusion
Beta access, a preload, a digital preorder, and full release are distinct states. A past beta entitlement does not substitute for a base-game purchase, and a completed preload does not establish permission to enter every mode. Read the current product entitlement rather than relying on a launcher tile left over from a test period.
Game Pass does not include Modern Warfare 4 at launch; its planned inclusion is Holiday 2027. A subscription may provide other service benefits or satisfy applicable online-play requirements, but it does not supply the required launch game license. Qualifying early entry depends on the digital purchase offer, not on the availability of older Call of Duty titles in a subscription catalog.
When contacting platform support about an unresolved entitlement, identify the purchased edition, purchasing account, storefront region, attempted mode, displayed message, and whether installation and updates completed. Those details describe the actual failure and are more useful than assuming that every lock icon means the release date changed.
